The Origins of Chocolate Chip Cookies

The history of chocolate chip cookies traces back to the 1930s when Ruth Graves Wakefield, the owner of the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, made a serendipitous discovery that would revolutionize the world of baking. Legend has it that Ruth, while preparing her popular Butter Drop Do cookies, ran out of baker’s chocolate and decided to use chopped Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate instead. To her surprise, the chocolate pieces did not fully melt, creating delectable pockets of chocolate in the cookies. Nestlé soon caught wind of this delightful accident, and in 1939, they struck a deal with Ruth, featuring her recipe on the back of their chocolate bar packaging. This marked the birth of the Toll House chocolate chip cookie and paved the way for what has become an iconic and universally cherished treat. Today, chocolate chip cookies continue to be a symbol of comfort and nostalgia, enjoyed by people of all ages around the globe.

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper. or silicone baking mats.
  2. Cream the Butter and Sugars: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. This can be done with a hand mixer or stand mixer. For cookies, I prefer the stand mixer because of how tough the dough will get.
  3. Add Eggs and Vanilla: Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually Add Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  6. Fold in Chocolate Chips: Gently fold in the chocolate chips using a spatula. Ensure that the chocolate chips are evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  7. Scoop Cookie Dough: Use a cookie scoop or tablespoon to drop rounded dough balls onto the prepared baking sheets. Leave enough space between each cookie to allow for spreading during baking.
  8. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. The centers may still look slightly undercooked, but they will continue to set as they cool.
  9. Cool on Baking Sheets: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Enjoy: Once cooled, grab a glass of milk and enjoy your freshly baked classic chocolate chip cookies! Store cookies in an airtight container for up to one week or freeze them for up to 3 months!
